Day 32 – On to Lake Michigan
Today’s weather was lots of sun. We pressed on for 9 more miles to Escanaba and saw four squashed porcupines on the busy highway. In Escanaba, we stopped at a bike store to top off our tires. We also bought and drank a half gallon of chocolate mile and bought food for our dinner at Elmer’s County Market. The route headed north from Escanaba for 8 miles along the shore of Lake Michigan, specifically Little Bay de Noc. Cool winds blew us north. The exceptionally high water in the lake lapped at the edge of a bike path that ran along the highway. At 4:30 pm, we arrived at Gladstone Bayside Park and for $15 got a camp site by Lake Michigan (see photo). We’re happy to be here. No bugs.

Day 31 – Chequemegon-Nicolet National Forest
Most of today’s ride ran through the Chequemegon-Nicolet National Forest. Large, non contiguous tracts of National Forests (NF) lands occur throughout northern Wisconsin. We passed by many signs pointing to National Forest campgrounds. A few miles from Eagle River we rode along, then we crossed the Wisconsin River (see photo).

Day 30 – Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail
We decided to take Mary up on her offer of an indoor place to stay. After buying a half/gallon of chocolate milk, we headed east following first CR W then CR K in the Heart of Vilas Country Bike Path. Well designed, well constructed, and well maintained- it ran for 13 miles to Eagle River, then 8 more miles south to CR N. The photo shows Betsy checking the mileage to Eagle River. At Eagle River we bought food for breakfast and topped off the air in our tires at the Coontail Bike Shop.

Day 29 – Rain, Lakes, Wetlands, Forests

Day 29 – Rain, Lakes, Wetlands, Forests
We slept in to 6:30 am and didn’t get going until 8 am. Today we began traveling north on US Hwy 63 under thick, gray skies. Before long, the predicted rain arrived. However, traffic wasn’t bad and the shoulder was adequate. In 20 miles we rode past Shell Lake where Betsy was nearly eaten by a giant walleye (see photo).

Day 28 – Into Wisconsin

Day 28 – Into Wisconsin
We saddled up and rode 16 miles to Osceola. Just before we crossed the St. Croix River (the first officially designated Scenic Riverway in the US), rain fell. We crossed the river and entered Wisconsin (see photo). We biked into town and waited under a gazebo for Wayne and Dakota. They arrived punctually at 9 am. We enjoyed the best breakfast of the trip at the Watershed Cafe. After saying our good byes, we biked 8 miles to St. Croix Falls where we got a WI state highway map.
