Day 3 – Difficult Hiking with a Full Pack

The elevation trace of the trail for the rest of the day looked easy with not much elevation gain and only one steep descent. But numerous short ups and downs plus lots of rocky trail wore me out. After reaching Bemis Mountain, I walked another half hour to a look out for lunch. The scene included two huge lakes (see photo).

Day 2 – Confronting The boogeyman

The trail dropped 300 ft. to a tiny stream where I got water (see photo). It may look funky but so what? I quickly passed the empty Hall Mountain lean-to. The rest of the day included one steep climb bracket by two steep descents. All three looked formidable in the AT Guide’s elevation profile. I wasn’t sure I could negotiate them.

Day 1 – To the max

My “going up” muscles are much stronger than “my going down” muscles. After lunch with three other hikers at the Frye Gap lean-to, a 500-foot climb to a ridge wasn’t a problem. But the 4 mile descent that followed was all that I could handle. I fell once and banged my left shin; I had to stop frequently to rest. At last, I reached Dunn Gorge and Falls.

Transition : Biking to Hiking the AT

Given the massive number of tourists and their cars, the shuttle bus is the only way to go. One of the featured spots, Sand Beach, attracts lots of people to its sand beach and 55-degree water (see photo).  In the task department, we took our bikes to a bike shop to be boxed and shipped home. We also mailed our extra gear and clothing home.

Day 18 on the Southern Tier Route

Day 18 on the Southern Tier Route. The hardest day thus far. In view of my planned 90-mile day, I hit the road at 7:30 A.M. after drinking a quart of chocolate milk (882 calories). Heavy clouds hung low in the sky and a brisk headwind blew.

Afterword

It's been a week since I left the trail. The cuts on my legs are healing nicely. Most of the pains have subsided, although my right shoulder is still stiff from a fall during the second to last day on the trail.
