Day 3 on the Appalachian Trail

On the trail early after my soaked oatmeal. I dropped down to Hogpen Gap, crossed a highway and waked through the woods with only minor ups and downs for 4.6 miles to Low Gap Shelter. Nobody was stirring. Easy walking for the next 8 miles mostly on a road. Flat and smooth with few rocks. Last night, the weather turned with a cold front and high winds. But my tent hardly flapped. Today I like the cooler weather. I ate lunch at Blue Mountain shelter. Then downhill steeply, losing 1000 feet of elevation to Unicoi Gap. Then back uphill for 1000 feet. Along the way, I stopped at a stream to soak my tired feet. They thanked me profusely. From the top I dropped 1000 feet of elevation to Indian Grave Gap. Guess what happened next? Back uphill, what else? I stopped for the night at the cheese factory site (really) where several other hikers were camped. It was great to have company. Today's miles - 18.4, total miles 56.6. Photo is an orchid.
