Day 56 – Up and down to the coast

We slept well next to Long Lake. We got up at 5:30am and were on the road by 6:15 am. We wanted to reach our day’s destination in Bath before the forecast afternoon thunderstorms arrived. We biked 3 miles to Naples, at the southern end of Long Lake, and made a wrong turn on Hwy 11 South. Once we were back on Hwy 11 North, we rode for 11 miles with lots of ups and downs to North Raymond Road.

A sign warned us of long construction delays on our route. Thus, we continued north on Hwy 11 to Mechanic Falls, then turned east on Hwys 11 and 121- toward Auburn. After 10 miles of mostly flat cycling along the Androscoggin River, we reached Auburn. We ate our second breakfast at the Happy Day’s Diner. A signed photo of Donald Trump decorated the wall above our booth. Back on the bike, we pedaled south, along the Androscoggin River to Durham on Hwy 9. We ate lunch and drank more water on a shaded bench at a city park.

After lunch, we biked 4 miles along a paved bike path that bordered busy US Hwy 1, then continued on a county road to Bath. We enjoyed a view of a tidal creek (see photo). We bought food, then rode to Warm Showers host Haley’s home. After cleaning up, we drove downtown for dinner at a restaurant by the water. Fellow cyclist Jerome, from Quebec, arrived after a 100-mile journey in today’s heat and joined us for dinner. What a fine end to the day.
